Tasks for week two

Tasks for this week:
-Our class group was expected to demonstrate our competence in using a digital camera, and tripod, capturing 5 images which they will display on our blog.
-We then opened a flicr account and up loaded these.
-We linked our flickr photos to these blogs by creating a photo badge.
-We also kept a copy of all our login and password codes as we are begining to open several accounts with various services
.

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". We were asked to discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. We were asked to consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras.

Film-cameras:
-Durable
-Quality
-Better photos
-surprise with photos

Digital-cameras:
-Cheap, lower quality
-Can check the photos as you take them, no surprise when developed
-Reliant on us and computers to keep them running.

Some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology are by using:
-Video cameras
-Webcams
-Hand helds
-Camera cellphones
-Live preview digital cameras
-Security cameras

We were then asked given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, to consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use. We came up with informed consent - having a clear purpose for photos explained to those who are in them, asking the individuals for permission and not misuse the right to take the photos. We also looked at who the photographer has responsibility to. We thought that we had responsibility to ourselves, "good practice", and also who is in the photos.

We looked at ways digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice. Photographs are being used for housing assessments for house plans, reports and building modifications. They are used for wheelchair seating setups and visual records. Using digital images can cut down on time in report writing and record keeping.

Flickr.com is a website our class all signed up to. It allows you to upload and organise your photos, to share and stay in touch with other members, crop fix and edit your images, and explore through other photos that people have added to the website. Similar websites to flickr are:
-
http://www.deviantart.com/ for photos sharing, photo manipulation sharing, 3d graphics sharing and so on.
-
http://www.photosig.com/ - great community of photographers
-
http://www.fotki.com/ - for sharing pictures and keeping them private.

We then looked at the difference between digital and an optical zoom.
Digital zoom:
-Has a matte area, selects it and blows it up. The zoom is very 'blocky'
-pixelated
Optical zoom:
-Better!
-3x optical at least
-Zoom should not affect the quality of the image

Finally pixels. Images are mozaics, each pixel is a light receptor that attracts light and fills with colour. Mega pixels: Million pixels, the more pixels the better quality photos come out. Good pixels 7.2 mega pixels - good A3 size with the photo not pixelating.
